Challenge

What was the client trying to achieve?

A production partner needed regular graphic updates installed across premium beauty counters and branded spaces within John Lewis Partnership department stores. The objective was to keep each location aligned with the brand's latest campaign while maintaining the high presentation standards expected by the retailer and its customers.

Department-store installations involve more than arriving with graphics and fitting them. City Install had to translate the brand brief into a workable store visit, confirm the approved scope and timing, and ensure that every installer arrived with the correct information and documentation. Where a store sits within a shopping centre, access can also depend on separate centre-management requirements, permits and delivery arrangements.

What was at stake?

Several stakeholders influence whether the work can proceed: the brand sets the creative and finish requirements, John Lewis Partnership controls activity within the store, and shopping-centre management may control access to the wider site. A gap between those requirements could lead to an aborted visit, a missed campaign date or work being completed outside the approved scope.

The environment is highly visible and customer-facing. Installers may be working around premium fixtures, merchandise and delicate counter finishes, often within restricted trading or out-of-hours windows. Incorrect positioning, damage, poor finishing or incomplete snagging would be immediately apparent and could affect the relationship between the brand, retailer and production partner.

City Install approach

How we made a difference.

City Install managed each update as a controlled retail-compliance task. Store schedules and artwork packs defined the location and graphic scope, while contractor authorisation forms, method statements and risk assessments were prepared for the relevant visits. This created a clear line of approval before installers attended site.

The team coordinated access requirements with the retailer and, where applicable, the shopping centre. Installers received clear instructions covering arrival, contacts, working times, the approved installation sequence and any store-specific restrictions. On site, they checked the brief against the counter, protected surrounding fixtures and merchandise, prepared surfaces and applied the graphics with close attention to alignment, edges and finish.

Installation, de-rigging and snagging were treated as separate controlled activities where required. Completion photographs and issue reporting gave the client visibility of the finished work and allowed any exceptions to be identified quickly rather than discovered after the campaign had moved on.

Result

What happened and what was the outcome?

The programme provides the client with a repeatable way to deliver brand updates inside one of the UK's best-known department-store groups. By coordinating the brand brief, retailer approval and local access requirements before deployment, City Install reduces avoidable site failures and gives installers the conditions needed to complete the work correctly.

For the retailer and brand, the benefit is consistent presentation across multiple locations without compromising safety, store operations or the customer environment. For the production partner, it provides a dependable installation resource that understands the detailed compliance and stakeholder management required in department stores and shopping centres.
